BTEC National Certificate Year 1
Abstraction

Below you will find the assessment criteria that you will be assessed and marked against in the crit at the end of this week.
It would a good idea to make yourself familiar with these criteria and work out where you are/ how you will achieve higher grades? and what assessment outcome you will have?

If you understand the marking, you will understand what type of questions you will need to answer and what your tutors will expect to see and grade. Within this project 'Abstraction', you will be covering assessment criteria you have already looked at in previous projects and new assessment closely linked to Painting (Fine Art Principals of Painting).

The way you talk and present your work and developed ideas will effect your overall grade. Your tutors will plan with you how best you could talk and present your work to your peers. It is down to you to be prepared and be able to complete all set work including the presentation and final outcomes before the deadline.

UNIT 1: Visual Recording in Art and Design
To achieve a pass grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

P1 identify and select primary and other
sources for recording purposes
P2 explain the process of exploring and
recording through appropriate markmaking
skills
P3 communicate information clearly to
different audiences through visual
recording
P3 communicate information clearly to
different audiences through visual
recording

To achieve a merit grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

M1 identify and respond to a broad range of
considered primary sources, consistently
showing effective experimental visual
recording skills
M2 show an individual approach to
communicating, illustrating and
analysing information to present
effective outcomes.

To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

D1 demonstrate independence and
innovation in selecting and using
informed primary sources, to produce
sophisticated, fluent visual records that
show comprehensive understanding of
communicating information.

UNIT 2: Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art and Design
To achieve a pass grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

P1 explore materials, techniques and
processes safely
P2 use materials, techniques and processes
P3 evaluate the suitability of selected
materials, techniques and processes at
relevant stages of the process.

To achieve a merit grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

M1 show considered understanding of the
characteristics and uses of materials,
techniques and processes through indepth
investigation and producing
diverse experimental work
M2 carry out purposeful analysis and
evaluation of materials, techniques and
processes in terms of suitability for the
intended outcomes.

To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

D1 perceptively use analysis, evaluation and
experimental techniques to creatively
and imaginatively develop work that
recognises the full potential and
limitations of materials, techniques and
processes and shows sophistication,
fluency, flair and understanding.

UNIT 5: Contextual Influences in Art and Design
To achieve a pass grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

P1 discuss contemporary and historical
developments in art and design
P2 discuss the interrelationships between
art works and the wider cultural context
P3 research and record contextual
information
P4 use information to produce and present
outcomes.

To achieve a merit grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

M1 purposefully research and effectively
organise information about art and
design developments, consistently linked
to the contexts in which works were
produced
M2 express coherent opinions, supported by
examples drawn from established
sources
M3 demonstrate a considered approach to
structuring and presenting coherent
outcomes from information sources.

To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

D1 extract and analyse complex information
independently gained from
comprehensive research
D2 express informed opinions and argued
conclusions, using vocational language
fluently.

UNIT 60: Painting in Fine Art
To achieve a pass grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

P1 demonstrate painting techniques
P2 investigate and explore media and
materials
P3 combine media, materials and
techniques
P4 evaluate and present finished work.

To achieve a merit grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

M1 demonstrate considered understanding
of diverse painting techniques
M2 purposefully experiment with diverse
materials and media through
investigation, exploration and
combination
M3 produce a considered evaluation of
investigations, explorations and
techniques, allied to the presentation of
a coherent body of work.

To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:

D1 independently demonstrate informed
understanding of painting techniques
with relevance to own work
D2 refine the selection, investigation,
exploration and combination of materials
and media to produce exciting and
original painting
D3 produce a comprehensive evaluation of
experimentations and techniques allied
to the presentation of a sophisticated
body of work.
